CHAPTER 16

The Seabrook Museum's conservation lab had been transformed into a secure processing area, with additional security posted outside and specialized equipment brought in to handle the delicate materials they'd recovered from the bunker. Chloe worked methodically, her conservation training guiding each careful step as she documented and prepared the sixth painting for examination.

Unlike the seventh painting found at Hawthorne House, which depicted a solitary woman facing the lighthouse, this one was of a coastal community scene. Fishermen were mending nets on a dock while children played nearby on a beach. At first glance, it appeared to be a simple, if beautifully rendered, portrayal of everyday Seabrook life in the 1960s.

But closer examination revealed the environmental storytelling Eleanor had described. There was subtle discoloration in the water, fewer fish in the catch being sorted, and a child holding a shell with an abnormal growth pattern.

Most striking were the background figures Elizabeth had incorporated of men in business attire observing the scene from a distant viewpoint, their faces rendered with precise detail despite their small scale.

Even without Eleanor's explanation, Chloe would have recognized their significance. They were witnesses to the consequences of environmental decisions, positioned as silent observers rather than active participants in the community's growing challenges.

"The composition is brilliant," she said to Ethan, who stood nearby reviewing Elizabeth's journal while officers processed Ryan's statement in another room. "She's created a visual record of both environmental impact and corporate accountability, but disguised it as a simple community portrait. You'd have to know what you were looking for to recognize the evidence she's documenting."

Ethan nodded, looking up from the journal. "Her written documentation is equally meticulous. She recorded dates, times, weather conditions, and specific observations at each collection site. There are even sketches of equipment that was used by Coastal Chemical employees during night operations when they thought no one was watching."

Apollo had settled nearby, maintaining his usual guard position. His occasional glances toward the door suggested he was remaining on the alert to any potential intrusions. He was a canine sentry complementing the human security outside.

"What about Component X?" Chloe asked, carefully photographing particular details of the painting for their documentation. "Has she identified it specifically?"

Ethan turned pages in the journal with gloved hands. "She refers to it as 'the military compound' in several entries. Apparently, Coastal Chemical had a contract with the Defense Department to develop and test a new chemical defoliant. It was something similar to what would later be known as Agent Orange in Vietnam, but with a modified composition meant to be more targeted and persistent."

Chloe paused in her work, the implications sinking in. "Chemical defoliant testing in Seabrook waters? That would have devastating environmental consequences. I’m not thinking of just the immediate damage, but the long-term effects on the ecosystem."

"Exactly," Ethan confirmed grimly. "According to her notes, Component X was designed to have environmental persistence measured in decades rather than years. Its chemical signature would remain in the soil and sediment long after visible effects had disappeared.
